Ian Wright reveals Erik ten Hag's selection mistake in Man Utd's FA Cup final defeat

Ian Wright claims Erik ten Hag made a selection mistake in Manchester United’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester City and should have started Alejandro Garnacho.

Ten Hag chose a front-three of Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho for the  FA Cup final at Wembley.

And City made a superb start as Ilkay Gundogan scored the fastest goal in an FA Cup final after only 13 seconds.

Going behind early could have rattled United – who were looking for their second trophy of the campaign – but they soon equalised before half-time through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.

But Gundogan scored again in the second half and Manchester United were unable to find another equaliser despite a good cameo from Garnacho, who replaced Eriksen on the hour mark.

‘I thought Manchester City were just very efficient,’ Wright told ITV Football after Manchester City won a seventh FA Cup trophy.

‘I thought we would see more from Manchester United. They improved after Garnacho came on and he definitely should have started the game for me. He proved he had a little bit more thrust about him.

‘Other than that, Manchester City were in total control really. It was quite tepid from United in the end.’

City's Jack Grealish said: ‘This is unbelievable. It’s stuff you dream of when you’re a little kid. I was desperate to win one at Aston Villa and now I’ve done it.

‘The best thing about this team is we have a mix of everything. Everyone is confident, we’ve got older more experienced lads and the younger lads are learning too.

‘We’ll have a good night tonight and then straight back at it on Sunday and Monday for a big game next week.’

Fernandes, meanwhile, said: ‘Everyone is down and it’s really difficult. We wanted to end the season in a different way but it wasn’t possible.

‘We’ve made big steps for next season, it wasn’t a successful season overall but it was a good one. We have come back next season and try to win bigger trophies.’
