Scholes claims Man Utd star 'doesn't have the heart' to stay at club

Paul Scholes says Anthony Martial ‘doesn’t have the heart’ to play for Manchester United after the club’s Europa League exit on Thursday.

The Red Devils delivered a poor display at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium as Sevilla ran out deserved 3-0 winners to reach the semi final where they will now play Juventus.

Man United are now looking to bounce back with a win in their FA Cup semi final against Brighton on Sunday.

But looking beyond the end of the campaign, Scholes has questioned whether Martial has a future under Erik ten Hag and believes United also need to address multiple positions in the upcoming transfer window.

When asked which area of the team Ten Hag needs to address, Scholes told BT Sport: I think a centre-forward position, that’s quite clear.

‘I think Anthony Martial is a talented lad but I think when the going gets tough, when he’s really got to dig in, he doesn’t quite have the heart for it. He didn’t tonight, again.

‘I don’t know how bad his injury is, he limped off. He could be training tomorrow, he could be out for six months, he’s one of them, you just don’t know.

‘I think in other areas, you look defensively, I think the right-back position is a little bit of a problem for him [Ten Hag]. He’s changing all the time between Wan-Bissaka and Dalot, I don’t think he’s sure on either of them.

‘You have to question the goalkeeper, especially tonight. I think Ten Hag eventually will want to play out from the back.

‘David de Gea has been a fantastic goalkeeper but he’s not a fantastic footballer. You see the pass he played into Harry Maguire, look, it’s not a bad pass I know, Harry Maguire wanted it, but you have to read the situation, read what’s going on in the stadium, it’s not the place.

‘Regardless of what the manager wants to play, read the situation, read the atmosphere. That’s an experienced player.’
