Pochettino identifies the striker Chelsea must sign after reaching agreement to become manager

Maurico Pochettino has identified the striker he wants to sign this summer ahead of his appointment as the new Chelsea boss, according to reports.

After several weeks of discussions, the London club have finally reached a full agreement with the Argentine to take over at Stamford Bridge along with his usual backroom team.

Pochettino is said to have secured a major say over Chelsea’s transfer strategy and, according to the Daily Mail, will push to sign Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez.

The west Londoners are in need of a forward after struggling for goals this campaign.

And, Chelsea actually have a negative goal difference and have only scored 36 times in the Premier League – less than half of the tallies recorded by Arsenal and Manchester City.

Kai Havertz is the club’s top scorer with seven goals – and only one other player has more than three.

Even before securing Pochettino, Chelsea’s decision makers had identified a proven goalscorer as a key signing this summer.

They retain an interest in Napoli's Victor Osimhen – who tops the Serie A scoring charts – but Pochettino prefers a move for Martinez.

The Inter star is just three goals behind Osimhen in the scoring charts, with his latest goal against Sassuolo taking him to 20 goals for the campaign.

Martinez also has five assists, meaning he has averaged a goal involvement every 96 minutes, while he has netted two goals in the Champions League.

There is a feeling that he would dovetail with the existing attacking options already at Chelsea, as well as incoming star Christopher Nkunku.

Martinez also has an good understanding with Romelu Lukaku, who could yet have a future at Stamford Bridge and will speak to Pochettino about a role in the team.
