Ten Hag leaves De Gea in limbo despite Man Utd contract claim

Erik ten Hag has refused to guarantee that David de Gea will be Manchester United 's first-choice goalkeeper next season as talks over his future continue.

De Gea has been locked in negotiations with United for months but has been scrutinised by supporters and pundits alike after a number of high-profile mistakes this term.

And that scrutiny is set to increase after the shot-stopper was at fault for the only goal of the match as United fell to a 1-0 loss at West Ham on Sunday.

Despite his howler, De Gea is said to be close to agreeing terms on a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford beyond the end of the campaign - however, it remains to be seen if he will still be United's No.1 next term.

According to The Telegraph, De Gea has receieved 'no assurances' from Ten Hag that he will be first-choice going forward, with the United coach determined to 'keep his options open'.

United are admirers of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, while the report also claims that the club have kept tabs on Diogo Costa.

It was reported in January that Ten Hag is keen on acquiring a new keeper, with concerns over De Gea's ability to play out from the back.

But, Ten Hag defended his current No.1 on Sunday after his latest howler.

Ten Hag told BT Sport after the game: "Yes [it was a bad error], but mistakes are part of football. As a team, you have to deal with it and bounce back. It's a team sport.

"Like you said, over the season, he's the person with the most clean sheets. Everyone has to take responsibility."

And he doubled down on the comments in his post-match press conference after the match, adding: "We want him to stay and we want him to extend his contract."
