Real Madrid spent £25.7m per goal on Eden Hazard in huge £182m waste

Real Madrid have now finally cut ties with Eden Hazard after four disappointing years at the Spanish club.

The La Liga side spent more than £180million on the winger at the Bernabeu, in what will go down as one of the biggest wastes of money in football history.

Hazard arrived at Madrid, coming off the back of a superb season at Chelsea where he scored 16 goals and assisted another 15 in 37 Premier League games.

But, he never found that form again after leaving the club. Real Madrid paid £103.5m for his services, with £15m of that coming in add-ons after he won the UEFA Champions League in the 2021-22 season.

Though they regularly looked for ways to sell the forward after it became clear that they had broken their transfer record on a player who was not at the same level he was previously.

He scored only one league goal in his debut season with Madrid.

The Belgian star leaves having contributed just seven goals and six assists in 76 games over the course of his spell at the club after his contract was terminated.

The transfer will definitely leave Madrid weighing up all of their big-money deals in the future.

Los Blancos will reconsider the contracts that they give to new signings too given that Hazard was earning himself a huge £380,000 per week despite often warming the bench.

Real Madrid paid the former Lille star £79m in wages over the course of his contract – taking their total spend on the winger to £182.5m.

Given his poor attacking output, it means that the Spanish team paid £25.7m for every goal that Hazard scored.

His reputation took a hit due to injuries and lack of fitness, the former Chelsea hero won’t feel that he has been short-changed by his experience considering that he took home £29,000 for every minute that he spent on the pitch.
