Guardiola names ‘unique’ Man City star who can reach Cole Palmer’s level

Pep Guardiola has praised the ‘unique’ Manchester City talent whom he believes could achieve a level comparable to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

City began their season with a strong start, securing a penalty-shootout win against Manchester United in the Community Shield at Wembley. Alejandro Garnacho scored for the Red Devils after 82 minutes, but a late equalizer from Bernardo Silva took the match to penalties.

Despite a missed penalty from Silva giving Erik ten Hag’s side an early advantage, Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans also missed their chances, allowing City to claim the trophy.

In a match with several interruptions, it was City’s Oscar Bobb who impressed most, causing problems for United’s defense and assisting Silva’s late goal.

With Julian Alvarez moving to Atletico Madrid, Bobb might see more playtime this season, especially after his strong pre-season performance. Guardiola praised the 21-year-old after his display at Wembley.

‘Oscar had a fantastic game, similar to his entire pre-season,’ Guardiola said at the post-match press conference.

‘He possesses something unique; his ability to stop and then accelerate, his first one or two steps in any direction are extraordinary.

‘The way he turns and delivers the cross for the goal shows his immense quality. He has great values and a strong work ethic. He has the potential to consistently perform at a high level.’

While City’s academy continues to produce talent, not all have remained with the club. Brahim Diaz, Jadon Sancho, and Cole Palmer are notable examples of players who have found success elsewhere.

Currently, Bobb seems set to stay at City, and Guardiola is optimistic that he could reach the heights achieved by Palmer, who had an impressive debut season at Chelsea.

‘That would be fantastic because Cole Palmer’s success at Chelsea last season was remarkable,’ Guardiola said when asked if Bobb could match Palmer’s accomplishments.

‘Palmer was among the top two or three players in the Premier League and made a significant impact at the Euros.

‘That success came because Cole played regularly, and I’m confident that if Oscar gets consistent minutes, he will achieve many great things – there’s no doubt about that.’
