Dani Carvajal’s gesture while sitting on the Real Madrid bench—soon after team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold went in for a challenge—has spread rapidly across social media.
Real were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis on Saturday, a result that all but ended their already faint chances of securing the La Liga title.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s team now trail league leaders Barcelona by 11 points with only five matches remaining, although they are set to visit Camp Nou for El Clasico next month.
They had taken a 1-0 lead against Betis thanks to Vinicius Junior, but Kylian Mbappe was forced off with a suspected hamstring problem, and Betis found an equaliser in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time through former Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin.
Alexander-Arnold completed the entire 90 minutes at right-back, despite facing scrutiny over some of his recent defensive displays.
He has clearly cemented his place as the preferred option ahead of Carvajal, who remained on the bench for the Betis clash.
Recently surfaced footage from the game shows Alexander-Arnold pressing high up the pitch, while Federico Valverde tracked back to help cover left winger Abde Ezzalzouli as Betis moved forward.
However, the Betis player still found room to advance, with Alexander-Arnold appearing to jog back toward his position instead of fully assisting Valverde defensively.
The camera then turns to Carvajal, who is seen making a walking gesture with his fingers shortly after Alexander-Arnold lost possession, while quietly speaking to a team-mate with his finger placed over his mouth.
It remains uncertain whether the gesture was directed at Alexander-Arnold or merely coincidental, but fans have come up with their own interpretations.🚨🚨| Footage shows Trent walking back instead of tracking back, with Dani Carvajal reacting on the bench.

One wrote: "I can't even figure out how this team go to this level. Such a disgrace."
Another commented: "You analysed his game before signing him. Trent is not doing anything new."
A third added: "Would've been captain of his boyhood club in a year and he traded it all for this. The most pointless transfer in football history and he'll regret it for the rest of his life."
A fourth remarked: "Carvajal is just mad he's sat on the bench as usual."
A fifth asked: "Was he [Trent] supposed to teleport?"
And a sixth wrote: "Cut him some slack please... it never makes sense to start tracking back in full speed from that far distance. Football is a team game. Players closer to the other end can cover up."
