Supporters of Manchester United have highlighted a crucial moment they believe officials overlooked in Lisandro Martinez’s sending-off for tugging the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Monday evening.
Already trailing 2-0 at the break following a brace from Noah Okafor, the situation deteriorated further for United when Martinez received a straight red card.
The Argentine centre-back was dismissed in the 56th minute after a VAR check identified that he had pulled Calvert-Lewin’s hair while contesting the ball.
Match official Paul Tierney was advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor and subsequently issued a red card for violent conduct.
"After review, the Manchester United No.6 is guilty of pulling his hair - violent conduct. My final decision is red card."
The decision mirrored an earlier case involving Michael Keane, who was also sent off for Everton this season, though confusion spread among those at Old Trafford as the referee’s explanation was not heard over the stadium tannoy.
Martinez made his way down the tunnel amid protests and was later seen discussing the moment with teammate Joshua Zirkzee.
Although hair pulling is deemed a red-card offence in modern football, United fans noticed that during the same clash, Calvert-Lewin seemed to have a grip on Martinez’s throat as they wrestled for possession.#PL 🏴 : Le cauchemar continue pour Man. That aspect was not addressed by the officials, but it quickly sparked strong reactions among the home supporters.
One fan on X fumed: "So Calvert Lewin can snatch at his throat, but Martinez cannot pull hair?"
A second livid supporter said: "Wdym Martinez is sent off for a hair pull whilst having his throat grabbed."
A third vented: "That is the most embarrassing red card I have ever seen. Calvert-Lewin has his hand on Martinez’s throat at the exact same time."
A fourth user added: "Calvert Lewin has Martinez by the throat at the same time but thats ok."
Casemiro reduced the deficit for the 10-man United side with a header, converting Bruno Fernandes’ 17th Premier League assist of the campaign.
Martinez now faces a three-match suspension and will be unavailable for key fixtures against Chelsea and Liverpool, with a meeting against Brentford also on the schedule.
